Installing Personal Web Server and using it
There now follows a rough guide to installing and setting up PWS. PWS is part of Windows 98. I hope to add a guide to setting up IIS shortly.

First you must install PWS (Personal Web Server). PWS is not part of the standard Windows install. It is an add on software package found on the Windows setup disk. To install PWS, insert the Windows CD into your CD drive. If windows starts to try and install itself again cancel it.

From the windows Start Button, select Run. It will be very near the start button. Click the mouse and enter the following into the dialogue box:

Replace 'E' with the path to your CD drive. Click OK to install the web server. Windows my need top be rebooted once this has been installed.

Once PWS has been installed you should see a new icon on the status bar of your screen (by the clock) like the following:

Placing the mouse over the icon should say that Personal Webserver is running. If PWS is not running, it will say so, and you will see a red circle with a cross in it.

Double click on the icon. This will bring up the following screen

Click the Advanced icon on the left at the bottom. The following screen will be seen.

Make sure that all the tick boxes are shown ticked as in the picture. Next click the 'Edit Properties' Button. You will see the following.

You will need to click on the browse button and select the path to your Intranet. When you have set the path to the correct directory, click OK. The web Server will now be running in the correct path. Finally, click the 'Main' icon (top left) and click on the start button. You should now see the following:

The web server can be simply stopped and started by clicking on the 'Stop' 'Start' button. You will notice that above the button, it shows http://ComputerName while to the right of the button, it shows the path that holds your Intranet. Next, run up the web browser and enter into the address bar, http://ComputerName/orangevalleysearch.html as in the example below.

This completes the setup of PWS and shows how the webserver is accesed from the web browser. Note that you need to replace the term YourComputerName with the name of your computer.
